My grandmo...My grandparents owned Calyptus Grove……
My grandmother would have been the “nude lady” that the D&B caller referred to. My grandfather worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a section foreman for 45 years, and when he retired in 1945, they fulfilled their lifelong dream to open their own nudist camp in Santa Cruz county. They bought Sunny Terraces out of Aptos, which they later sold to become a girl scout camp. They then bought Calyptus Grove, which I visited several times going between home in Marin county to college in Redlands. They were active members of the American Sunbathers Association and really believed in a healthy lifestyle. my grandfather lived to almost 91, my grandmother to 93. My father was inalterably opposed to nudism, but my mother and sister thought it was a hoot. No big deal, going without clothes….. My grandmother, who had been raised in Mexico, and grandfather, who worked for decades with mostly Mexican railroad laborers, spoke only Spanish in their home, and were dyed-in-the-wool-conservative Republicans. So much for stereotypes!
And yes, I have had dozens of delightful conversations over the past six decades whenever I meet someone from Fresno that invariably knew about the existence of Calyptus Grove…. Knew where it was, and most had stories of their own……..Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10712851716868092861noreply@blogger.com
